Measuring Coherent Optical Modulation
Recorded on July 27, 2010

Measuring Coherent Optical Modulation VideoIn order to increase the capacity of existing fiber optic transmission systems, complex modulation schemes are being developed which maximize the use of the available bandwidth. These modulation schemes use the optical phase in addition to its amplitude to code information allowing for transmission speeds in the hundreds of Gb/s over a single optical wavelength. The most widely used form of coherent optical modulation is known as DP-QPSK (dual polarized quadrature phase shift keying) and has been demonstrated at speeds up to 224 Gb/s. Measuring this type of signal differs significantly from the more traditional methods used for OOK (on off keying) signals. Performance metrics such as extinction ratio and eye mask testing are replaced with constellation diagrams and bit error ratio. In addition, coherent optical signals utilize intradyne modulation which requires an optical local oscillator and digital signal processing to detect and measure. This one hour webinar will discuss optical intradyne transmission and coherent detection along with the key measurements for these systems compared to more traditional OOK systems. Equipment requirements will be discussed and a measurement example will be presented. Watch webinar >
